Guidelines for Approval of Small Accounts Below Standard Minimums
1. Standard Account Minimums
- Existing Client Relationships:
Minimum new account size: $5,000.00 in assets under management (AUM). - New Client Relationships:
Minimum relationship size: $25,000.00 AUM.
Exceptions may be considered under the right business case but require pre-approval by the Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) and CEO prior to initiating client paperwork.
2. Exceptions Process
Exceptions must be made prior to any portfolio manager call.
To request approval for a sub-minimum account, the Advisor must email a brief outline to kmulders@croftgroup.com , cc’ing jayres@croftgroup.com , with the following information:
Required in the Pre-Approval Request:
- Client Background:
Who is the client? What is the nature of their relationship with the Advisor or the firm? - Opportunity Summary:
Why is this client a worthwhile exception? Include any context on family relationships, future liquidity events, or pipeline value. - Intended Contribution Plan:
How and when is the account expected to grow? What is the projected AUM potential? - Investment Strategy:
Clarify that the account will initially be invested in a single fund solution until it reaches a size appropriate for our diversified standard models.
This upfront communication ensures the Portfolio Management (PM) and Compliance teams are aligned early, helping us avoid miscommunication and streamlining the onboarding process.
3. Framing Client Expectations
Clients approved under this exception process should be clearly informed:
- The account is being accepted as an exception to firm policy.
- The investment will be placed in a single-fund strategy to maintain efficiency.
- Portfolio diversification and full model access will occur only once the account meets the standard investment threshold.
4. Final Note
This process supports our goal of nurturing long-term client relationships while maintaining operational discipline. Taking five minutes to provide context enables the entire team to deliver a smooth, professional onboarding experience — even when the AUM is modest.
