New Client Identification
CFG and National Bank Independent Network (NBIN) requires clients to provide two forms of identification to comply with regulatory standards and anti-money laundering laws.
Primary Identification Requirements
NBIN mandates that clients present a valid, government-issued photo ID. Acceptable forms include:
- Canadian or foreign passport
- Driver’s licence with photo
- Permanent Resident Card
- Canadian Citizenship Card (issued before 2012)
- Secure Certificate of Indian Status
- NEXUS Card
- Provincial or territorial identity card
These documents must be original, valid (not expired), and in good condition. If your name has changed, you may need to provide a name change certificate.
Supporting and Alternative Identification Methods
CFG and NBIN require a valid government-issued photo ID to open a new client account. In addition to this photo ID, clients will be asked to provide a supporting document to verify their identity. If the client does not possess an eligible photo ID, two original documents from different reliable Canadian sources may be accepted as an alternative to confirm identity.
These documents must be recent, unaltered, and confirm:
- Your name and address
- Your name and date of birth
Examples of acceptable supporting or alternative documents include:
- Property tax assessment
- Utility bill (e.g., electricity, water, telecommunications)
- Canada Pension Plan (CPP) statement
- Provincially issued vehicle registration
- Birth certificate
- Government-issued benefit statement
